German IPTV: Watch German TV Anywhere in the World
Updated: October 2026 · 6 min read · By DigiSuite (IPTV provider) · How we work
Millions of Germans live abroad, and many more people outside Germany learn the language, follow the Bundesliga or simply miss the Tatort on Sunday night. But German TV is not easy to watch outside the country: many streams are geo-blocked, and German streaming apps often only work inside Germany. This guide explains, in plain English, every realistic way to watch German TV abroad, from satellite to German IPTV, with the pros and cons of each.
Why German TV is hard to watch abroad
German broadcasters buy most of their rights for Germany only. Football, Hollywood films and many series can only be shown legally to viewers inside the country. That is why the live streams of ARD, ZDF, RTL and others often show a notice instead of the programme when you open them from abroad. Some content in the public broadcasters' online libraries (Mediathek) is available worldwide, but live sport and many films are not.

Option 1: Satellite (Astra 19.2° East)
Most German channels are broadcast via the Astra satellite at 19.2° East. Its signal covers most of Europe, so in many countries you can receive German TV with a normal satellite dish. The public channels (ARD, ZDF, regional channels) are free and unencrypted. Private channels in HD require a paid HD+ card.
- Pros: No internet needed, stable picture, free public channels.
- Cons: You need a dish and permission to install it. Outside Europe, or in southern Spain, Portugal and Greece, you may need a large dish or get no signal at all.
Option 2: EU portability for paid subscriptions
If you live in Germany and travel within the EU, an EU regulation helps you: paid online subscriptions such as Sky, DAZN or a German TV streaming service must also work when you are temporarily in another EU country. This applies to holidays and business trips, not to a permanent move. If you live abroad permanently, the provider can block access.
Option 3: Official apps and online libraries
The ARD Mediathek and ZDFmediathek offer part of their programmes worldwide, especially news, documentaries and own productions. Deutsche Welle (DW) broadcasts internationally and is available everywhere. For most live channels, sport and series, however, the apps check your location. A VPN can change your apparent location, but it may break the terms of service of the platform. We explain the topic in German in our guide VPN für IPTV.
Option 4: German IPTV
With IPTV, German channels reach your TV, stick or phone over the internet, bundled in one app with a programme guide (EPG). For many expats this is the most practical solution: no dish, no German address needed, and German and international channels in one place. Choose a reputable provider and ask in writing which German channels are included. Our guide Warnsignale unseriöser IPTV-Anbieter (in German) lists the red flags.
- Pros: Works in most countries with good internet, one app for all channels, works on many devices.
- Cons: Needs a stable connection. Quality depends on the provider.

Watching the Bundesliga abroad
In Germany, the Bundesliga is split between Sky and DAZN. Abroad, other broadcasters hold the rights, often with commentary in the local language. If you want German commentary, check which option above gives you a German sports channel. Kick-off times are in Central European Time: Saturday 15:30 and 18:30 in Germany is 14:30 and 17:30 in the UK and Portugal. Details on the 2026/27 rights (in German): Bundesliga 2026/27 streamen.
Technical tips for expats
- Internet speed: About 8 to 10 Mbit/s per HD stream, around 25 Mbit/s for 4K.
- Connection: Use a LAN cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Long distances to the server can add delay, so a wired connection helps even more abroad. Router tips (German): Router und WLAN einstellen.
- Time zones: Many IPTV apps let you set the time zone of the programme guide, so the EPG shows local times.
- Devices: A Fire TV Stick or Android box works almost everywhere. Setup guide (German): Fire TV Stick einrichten.
Paying from abroad
Many German services only accept German payment methods or addresses. When you choose an IPTV provider, check how you can pay from your country and whether the price is a one-time payment or a subscription that renews automatically. More about using IPTV abroad (German): IPTV im Ausland nutzen.
